Ban Ki-moon
Secretary-General of the United Nations
United Nation Headquarters
New York, NY 10017, USA
Dear Mr. Ban Ki-moon
I am writing in regards to the Non-Align Movement’s conference which you have been invited to and which is hosted by the Islamic Republic of Iran in Tehran on August 30th 2012. I would like to emphasise that as the secretary-general of the United Nations, this invitation has provided the golden opportunity for you to show the United Nations’ support for millions of people in Iran.
I would like to urge you to firmly express your concern, disapproval and denunciation of imprisonment, torture and execution of thousands of political dissidents by the regime in Iran, and also the lack of freedom of expression for people in Iran. A strong condemnation, by the secretary-general of the United Nation, is the least that is expected to condemn the barbaric act of stoning to death. The widespread discriminations based on gender, sexual orientation, religion, and other forms of inequalities practised by the Islamic Regime in Iran, deserves a strong condemnation from UN.
In the last thirty three years, every voice of opposition has been crushed to death by the regime and thousands of men, women and even children have been put in prison, tortured, raped, and executed. In the summer of 1988 and only in three weeks, five thousands political prisoners were trailed in kangaroo style Islamic courts, and were executed. Several mass graves across Iran, which contains the remains of these political prisoners, have been identified by the families of the victims. There is also a report by Jeffery Roberson which documents the mass executions in 1988 (please see Encl. one).
We have a list of tens of current political prisoners who have been sentenced to execution merely for exercising their rights to free expression and for raising their voice in demonstrations across the country. (Please see Encl. two)
Families of the political prisoners are constantly harassed, and live under the threat of prosecution from the various government officials. In order to prevent these families from speaking publicly about the situation of their sons and daughters in prison, and to psychologically torture them, the government and prison officials deliberately deny these families the information about the whereabouts of their loved ones.
In 2009 and during mass demonstrations following the election of Ahmadinejad, thousands of demonstrators, some of them as young as twelve years old, were arrested, many of these prisoners were tortured, raped, executed and many others are still in prison.
In their recent attempt to demoralise the political prisoners, the regime in Tehran adopted a scheme which is to deliberately depriving those political prisoner who were suffering from various illness and in dire need of medical attention, from any form of medical attention. This has resulted in the death of many such political prisoners. In a meeting with representatives of the European Parliament, Campaign to Free Political Prisoners in Iran (CFPPI) was able to successfully draw the attention of these delegates towards this deliberate attempt by the Islamic regime to slowly kill the political prisoners. (Please see Encl. three and four)
The Non-Align Movement’s conference is the largest in the last fourteen years and the heads of more than fourthly countries have been invited to attend. This conference is being held at a time when the regime in Tehran is publicly and internationally rebuking and defying every accepted international convention.
I would like to reiterate the importance of seizing the opportunity that the Non-Align Movement’s conference in Tehran has created. This is one of the best occasions for you to raise your concerns and also condemn the serious violation of human rights by the Islamic regime Iran. United Nations should raise its voice against all the atrocities committed by the Islamic regime. UN cannot know all these and remain silent.
We are looking forward to your support, and will be happy to provide further evidence on the abuse of human rights by the Islamic regime in Iran.
